Health 2.0: mejora en nuestra calidad de vida


Nuestro estilo de vida actual muchas veces nos conduce a descuidar la alimentación, hacer poco o ningún ejercicio físico, o a no descansar lo suficiente. Estos malos hábitos de vida pueden conducirnos a desarrollar enfermedades crónicas (hipertensión arterial, diabetes tipo 2 o enfermedades cerebrovasculares, entre otros), favorecer el avance de determinadas dolencias o tener un impacto importante en los factores de riesgo. Tal es así que las enfermedades no transmisibles ya representan más del 60% de la carga de mortalidad, morbilidad y discapacidades en todo el mundo (World Health Organization, 2005).

Ante este escenario, conocer mejor el estilo de vida de un paciente, establecer un diagnóstico adecuado y realizar un seguimiento del mismo, se vuelve crítico. Para ello se están desarrollando nuevas tecnologías, denominadas Health 2.0 que además están facilitando el crecimiento de la medicina personalizada. Gracias a las mismas, es posible monitorizar parámetros biomédicos obtenidos en la vida diaria de los pacientes y, así, informar y ayudar en el diagnóstico y tratamiento a los profesionales médicos. De esta manera, la medicina personalizada puede contribuir a aumentar la esperanza de vida del paciente, a la vez que reduce el gasto sanitario.

Derivada de estos malos hábitos de vida una de las enfermedades más frecuentes es la obesidad, la cual ha sido catalogada por la OMS como la pandemia global del siglo XXI. Se considera que la obesidad fue responsable de 3 millones de muertes en el mundo en 2010, cifra que paradójicamente fue 3 veces superior a la correspondiente al número de personas que murieron por desnutrición.

Como ejemplo de tecnología Health 2.0 dirigida a tratar la obesidad, la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid cuenta con la solución “GAMECARE. Pierde peso jugando” desarrollada por el  grupo de investigación Life Supporting Technologies.

La solución propuesta por la UPM consiste en una clínica virtual basada en sistemas inteligentes que monitorizan y controlan los parámetros biológicos y la alimentación de los usuarios con el objetivo de tratar la obesidad. Así, aplicando tecnologías innovadoras se ha conseguido un sistema de bajo coste, que induce a los usuarios a utilizarlo asiduamente ya que controla y supervisa su actividad de manera constante.

Biometría, la seguridad del futuro


La seguridad y la búsqueda de sistemas que eviten la suplantación de identidad son una de las grandes preocupaciones de la mayoría de organizaciones en todos los mercados, en los que la biometría se encuadra como una solución natural y difícilmente imitable al tratarse de métodos que reconocen los rasgos y gestos de los individuos. En este sentido, las TICs han abierto un campo realmente importante al proporcionar tecnologías útiles y fiables a la biometría, permitiendo la identificación segura de las personas.

El sector de la biometría es un mercado muy amplio, como por ejemplo lo demuestran los productos y servicios orientados a la seguridad biométrica en los dispositivos móviles, que pasará de 30 millones en 2011 a 161 millones de dólares en 2015. Debido a las crecientes funciones que se le están dando a los dispositivos móviles, como es la utilización del mismo como medio de pago, exigen que los medios que aseguren la identificación aumenten sus prestaciones.

En este sentido, el Grupo de Biométrica, Bioseñales y Seguridad (GB2S) de la UPM ha realizado grandes avances y presentadas tecnologías muy versátiles, de fácil adopción y bajo coste, que representan una gran innovación en el mercado de la seguridad de los dos dispositivos móviles, como hemos podido ver en el video presentado al principio de esta noticia. Dos ejemplos son In-Air Signature y Handroid, ambas con registro de software.


In-Air Signature es un software para la verificación de personas a través de dispositivos móviles, la cual se realiza a través de un gesto que el individuo realiza con la mano a modo de firma, con el único requerimiento de que el móvil tenga incorporado un acelerómetro. La polivalencia de esta tecnología es muy amplia, ya que aparte de que se puede integrar fácilmente con otras aplicaciones, también se puede aplicar a diferentes dispositivos que tengan incorporado un acelerómetro, además de que puede ser utilizado en otros campos diferentes a la seguridad, como el pago con el móvil así como otros contenidos digitales.



Handroid se trata de un software que permite la verificación del individuo a través de la geometría de la mano, la cual es capturada a través de una fotografía y posterior análisis de la misma, y no necesitando excesiva colaboración del usuario para realizarla. Al igual que In-Air Signature, tiene un bajo coste computacional y amplia aplicación sectorial.

Introduction

The Technical University of Madrid (UPM), within the activities promoted by the Center of Support for Technological Innovation and in the frame of the development of the International Campus of Excellence of Montegancedo, launches the 1st UPM Innovatech, Innovation and Technology -Based Entrepreneurship International Workshop.

In this journey we will be able to know experiences and acceleration models of new technologies, in order to promote its adoption by the most innovative markets.

Presentations, Networking and Business Opportunities will take place in a day that connects large companies, researchers, experts, investors, technological SMEs and new businesses with high growth potential.

Energy, materials, nanotechnology, health, internet, mobility, transport, security, space, agri-food and biotechnology sectors are among others, will be highlighted from the point of view of the exploitation of new technologies and new models of technological acceleration.

California is once again one of the centers of technological investment in the United States. After accusing the crisis in 2007 prior to other parts of the world, California is now again one of the first places where the recovery is occurring with great dynamism of investment, technological innovation and employment. The EU aims to boost this process and lost time at the frame of Horizon 2020.

To compare these strategies and to learn from them is essential. Inside the function of the UPM Center for Support of Technological Innovation of connecting technology initiatives of the Technical University of Madrid with the leaders of the world, in this workshop is presented much of the existing set of relationships with investors and technologies in California.

Glenn Osaka has over 30 years of experience in building and managing information technology based businesses. He most recently served as a Senior Vice President at Juniper Networks responsable for the company´s services portfolio globally. Prior to his role at Juniper, he served as the Vice President, Strategy and Planning for Worldwide Operatios at Cisco Systems and as Vice President, Enterprise Computing at the Hewlett Packard Company. In addition to his experience wiht large corporations, he served as CEO of Reactivity Inc. a startup focused on web service integration (acquired by Cisco), and as Managing Director for the Redleaf Group, an early stage venture capital firm in Silicon Valley. Glenn has also served as a member of the Board of Directors for several U.S. based startup companies. He has also been an early stage advisor to Paypal and Insight Venture partners. In the non-profit domain, Glaann has served as a board member for CommerceNet, an organization that helped set the groundwork for global electronic commerce and as Chairman and board member for the Center for Asian American Media.
Glenn was educated at UCLA where he completed both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master in Business Administration.


 

Jonathan Taplin is director of the Annenberg Innovation Lab based at USC. Jonathan Taplin's areas of specialization are in International Communication Management and the field of digital media entertainment.

Taplin began his entertainment career in 1969 as Tour Manager for Bob Dylan and The Band. In 1973 he produced Martin Scorsese's first feature film, Mean Streets, which was selected for the Cannes Film Festival. Between 1974 and 1996, Taplin produced 26 hours of television documentaries (including The Prize and Cadillac Desert for PBS) and 12 feature films including The Last Waltz, Until The End of the World, Under Fire and To Die For. His films were nominated for Oscar and Golden Globe awards and chosen for The Cannes Film Festival seven times.

In 1984 Taplin acted as the investment advisor to the Bass Brothers in their successful attempt to save Walt Disney Studios from a corporate raid. This experience brought him to Merrill Lynch, where he served as vice president of media mergers and acquisitions. In this role, he helped re-engineer the media landscape on transactions such as the leveraged buyout of Viacom. Taplin was a founder of Intertainer and has served as its Chairman and CEO since June 1996. Intertainer was the pioneer video-on-demand company for both cable and broadband Internet markets. Taplin holds two patents for video-on-demand technologies.

Taplin was appointed by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in December 2006 to the California Broadband Taskforce.

Mr. Taplin graduated from Princeton University. He is a member of the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and sits on the advisory board of the Democracy Collaborative at the University of Maryland. Taplin is a member of the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and sits on the International Advisory Board of the Singapore Media Authority and the Board of Directors of Public Knowledge. Taplin was appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the California Broadband Policy Task Force in January of 2007.

Kamila  Markram is a neuroscientist, autism researcher and co-founder & CEO of Frontiers, a leading open-access academic publisher and research network.
Kamila graduated in psychology from the Technical University Berlin in 2003. She did her diploma thesis work at the Max-Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt under the supervision of Sergio Neuenschwander and Wolf Singer focusing on fast coherent responses to visual inputs as a function of prior synchronization states in the visual cortex. She obtained her PhD degree in Neuroscience at the Brain Mind Institute at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) in 2006 under the supervision of Carmen Sandi, where her work in the Laboratory of Behavioral Genetics was focused on molecular alterations involved in emotional learning and characterization of a rat model of autism. She then joined the Laboratory of Neural Ensemble Physiology at the BMI, EPFL as a post-doc with Miguel Nicolelis where she continued working on autism using parallel multi-electrode, multi-site recordings in a rat model to unravel the brain circuit alterations underlying autism.

Since 2008 she is the autism project group leader in the Laboratory of Neural Microcircuits, BMI, EPFL. This team studies autism in several rodent models using a spectrum of non-invasive and invasive approaches at the genetic, molecular, cellular, synaptic, local circuit, circuit, systems and behavioral level. Together with Henry Markram, she co-developed the "Intense World Theory of Autism” which proposes that many symptoms of autism may be secondary to exaggerated fear memories and an overly intense world.

Programa "Inspire" UPM-Repsol. Te ayudamos a hacer realidad tus ideas




Tras el éxito del Primer Programa Inspire, Repsol y la UPM han puesto en marcha una nueva edición de esta iniciativa. 

A través de Inspire se invita a toda la comunidad universitaria de la UPM a presentar sus propuestas de ideas o proyectos que puedan contribuir de manera innovadora y creativa a los grandes retos energéticos. En esta ocasión, los grandes retos tecnológicos planteados son los siguientes:


  • Nano – sensores: monitorear en tiempo real las propiedades de líquidos en sistemas porosos complejos
  • Catálisis: Para eliminación de NOx en fase gas
  • Almacenamiento de energía
  • Materiales: Mejora relevante de sus propiedades 




En cualquier caso, el programa está abierto a otros proyectos que, aunque no se ajusten a estos retos, propongan aproximaciones novedosas en el ámbito energético.

Fases Programa Inspire:

  • Se abre una convocatoria de recepción de propuestas desde el 4 de octubre hasta el día 3 de diciembre de 2013.
  • Posteriormente, se realizará una selección de hasta 10 ideas, que serán financiadas con un importe de 2.000 € cada una, con el objetivo de preparar planes de proyecto.
  • Finalmente de estas 10 ideas se elegirán un máximo de 5 proyectos, a los que se les dotará de financiación suficiente para ser desarrollados, bien en la UPM, bien en el Centro de Tecnología Repsol.


Nota: Aunque el programa está dirigido a la comunidad UPM pueden participar junto a la UPM otras entidades, españolas o no, a través de consorcios.

[II curso de comercialización de tecnologías UPM] 1ª Jornada del curso: ¿Cómo vender tu tecnología?


El martes 1 de octubre comenzó el II curso de comercialización de tecnologías de la UPM organizado por el Centro de Apoyo a la Innovación Tecnológica UPM CAIT - innovatech, con un total de 27 asistentes, todos investigadores de la UPM con resultados de investigación susceptibles de ser comercializados.


En la primera jornada, se empezó con una exposición de las actividades realizadas desde el CAIT de Montegancedo por parte de Gonzalo León,dando la bienvenida a los asistentes y acercándoles los diferentes servicios y actividades que se realizan a través de UPM-innovatech y actúaUPM.



Poteriormente se empezó con el "Módulo 0: ¿Cómo vender tu tecnología?", impartido por Arístides Serna, Director del Programa de Innovación y Creación de Empresas de la UPM. En este módulo se vieron temas como el concepto de utilidad, donde se definió el concepto de tecnología, los recursos, el equipo y el modelo de negocio; para luego introducirnos al análisis estratégico del entorno, ver unos conceptos iniciales de la venta y terminar con algunas conclusiones importantes de todo lo visto en la sesión.

Este curso no es solamente teórico, sino que además tiene un alto componente práctico, como se puede apreciar en la siguiente foto donde los alumnos practiban el Elevetor pitch en base a su tecnología.


Hoy continuaremos el curso con la intervención de Alberto Calero y el Módulo 1: Marketing y desarrollo de productos.

Esta acción se desarrolla en el marco de actividades de la cátedra universidad-empresa de Clarke, Modet & Cº con la UPM.
